JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Should You Use?
A practical guide to choosing JPG, PNG, or WebP for photos, screenshots, transparent graphics, and website images.
Use JPG for broad photo compatibility
JPG is a reliable choice for photos and general sharing because it is widely supported. It creates small files by compressing image detail, which works well for natural photos but can soften text and sharp graphics.
JPG does not support transparency. If a transparent PNG is converted to JPG, the transparent area needs a background color.
Use PNG for transparency and sharp graphics
PNG is useful when the image needs transparency or very crisp edges, such as logos, diagrams, UI screenshots, and graphics with flat color. It can preserve detail well, but file sizes can become large.
If a PNG is a full-color photo with no transparency, WebP or JPG will often be smaller.
Use WebP for modern website images
WebP is a strong default for websites because it usually creates smaller files than JPG or PNG while keeping good visual quality. It supports both photo compression and transparency.
For modern browsers, WebP is usually the best choice for blog images, hero graphics, product photos, and thumbnails.
Check the output before publishing
There is no single format that wins every time. Screenshots, photos, transparent graphics, and icons behave differently. Convert the file, compare the result, and keep the version that looks clear at the smallest practical size.
